This is one of Mattel's earliest toys, produced before they incorporated in the 1940s when the company was known as Mattel Creations and was based in Culver City California. It's a heavy paper-covered fiberboard music box with colorful litho print graphics of children riding a sleigh and playing outdoors. The back is red tin. There's a blue and white cotton twist cord to hang the music box around the child's neck. When the Jack-in-the-box style wood and metal turn crank at the side is turned, the box plays Jingle Bells. It plays very well, probably as well as it did when new.
The music box measures 6 by 5-1/2 by 3 inches. There is some age discoloration to the paper graphics, and a little wear to the paper at the corner edges, otherwise it's in very good condition for its age and type. The original box is present but is worn with one end flap missing. Printed on the box is "A Futurland Music Box Toy"and "Plays Christmas Tunes", though only one song plays. A scarce holiday item in very nice, still working condition.
