This is one of Mattel's earliest toys, produced before they incorporated in the 1940s when the company was known as Mattel Creations and was based in Culver City California. It's a heavy paper-covered fiberboard music box with bright litho print graphics of children riding a sleigh and playing outdoors. The back is blue tin. There's a red and yellow cotton twist cord to hang the music box around the child's neck. When the Jack-in-the-box style wood and metal turn crank at the side is turned, the box plays Jingle Bells. It plays very well, probably as well as it did when new.
The music box measures 6 by 5-1/2 by 3 inches. There is some age discoloration to the paper graphics, otherwise it's in excellent condition with no damage and little wear other than at the corners. The original box is present and intact but with some age discoloration and storage wear at the flaps as shown. Printed on the box is "A Futurland Music Box Toy" and "Plays Christmas Tunes", though only one song plays. A scarce holiday item in very nice, still working condition.
