This boxed early 1930s paper maché composition angel Christmas tree top decoration was made for the George Borgfeldt Corporation, a New York importer of toys, dolls, and giftware. The angel kneels atop a composition globe heavily encrusted in beige mica and clear glitter, her arms folded in prayer, her head slightly bowed. She has heavy embossed silver foiled paper glittered wings and wears a spiked crown or halo. The topper is nearly 9-1/2 inches tall.
This type of tree top decoration didn't usually last a long time due to fragile materials but she's in excellent condition for being nearly 100 years old. The foil-covered crown or halo has slight bending at the upper tips as shown. The delicate wings are intact without tears, though the silver has darkened a bit with age. The paint is very good. The only real issue is a light smudge of the blue dress paint at the left side of the angel's face. The original box is present.and in good condition with minor age wear. The angel looks American made but may have been imported from Germany.
